Guidelines for Decontamination
To ensure safe systems of work and to prevent transmission of infection, it is essential that that equipment is decontaminated before being sent to Ultrawave for servicing, repair or validation. This is in accordance with the requirements of the Health and Social Care Act 2008. The following guidance provides details on the method of decontamination for equipment that has been used in a medical environment that may be contaminated with body fluids:

Put on disposable apron and gloves (wear eye or facial protection if there is a risk of splashing to the face). | To protect against risk of personal contamination. |
Wash inside and outside the ultrasonic machine with a detergent and warm water using disposable paper towels, dry with disposable paper towels. | To remove any visible contamination. |
Make up a suitable volume of 10,000 ppm hypochlorite solution. This can be in the form of granules, e.g., Haz tabs, or a solution; Milton 2%, 1 part Milton to 2 parts water; Household bleach: usually 1 part bleach to 10 parts water. | |
Ensure the ultrasonic machine drain valve is closed. | |
Fill the ultrasonic machine with hypochlorite solution. | To disinfect the machine. |
Using disposable paper towels, wipe the non-wetted tank flange area with hypochlorite solution. | To disinfect the machine. |
Using disposable paper towels, wipe the outside of the machine with hypochlorite solution 1,000 ppm. | To disinfect the machine. |
Leave for 5 minutes. | To ensure thorough decontamination. |
Open the drain valve to empty the ultrasonic machine into a sink or sluice. | |
Clear away used paper towels as infectious or offensive waste. | To prevent against further risk of contamination. |
Rinse the inside of the machine with warm water using a disposable paper towel. Dry with disposable paper towels. | To clear away remains of contamination and/or hypochlorite. |
Remove personal protective equipment and discard as offensive waste. | |
Wash hands thoroughly. | To prevent transmission of infection. |
